- A Target Women video by comedian Sarah Haskins at Current TV skewers gender-based advertising. In this instance, it's the Doofy Husband cliché. Makes you wonder if some advertisers ever really think about how they're supposedly reaching out to their target market!

| Hi,
Here it is, the first official day of fall...can you believe it?! I hope you got to spend some time this summer doing things that inspired, surprised and energized you. Often the best thing we can do for our professional life is get away from it all for a while!
Here's some things I did this summer...

She Sells Sea Shells...
If you indulge in "conchylomania" - shell collecting - like I do, then hopefully you got to the beach this summer. Here's some interesting design-related facts I learned about shells from the Smithsonian:
- Marine snails were the source of precious purple dye, painstakingly collected one drop at a time, that became the symbolic color of royalty because of its scarcity and expense.
- Shells served as models for the volute on the capital of Greek Ionic columns
- Shells also inspired Leonardo da Vinci's design for the very first spiral staircase, installed in a French chateau.
- An entire French art movement was shell-inspired: the Rococo, combining the French rocaille, meaning the practice of decorating with shells and rocks, and the Italian barocco, or Baroque.

Creative Freelancer Conference
The last week of August I attended the second annual Creative Freelancer Conference. It may come as a shock to some that we "arty" types aren't always the best at running a business, so this conference targets designers, writers, photographers, illustrators and other creative types to help us improve our business savvy.
- Seminars were offered on writing and presenting proposals, effective presentations, using social media, and thriving in a create-or-die environment, among other things. It was three days well-spent in the company of fellow creatives making connections, sharing ideas and strategies, and learning how to run a business that serves our clients better. Many of the things discussed, especially concerning marketing, don't just apply to creative businesses, either. If you'd like me to share what I learned with you, please get in touch. Look at that...it's helping me serve you better already!

Oh, Give Me a Home...
Where the buffalo roam... I have to mention that I visited Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks this summer. This definitely should be one trip on everyone's "bucket list," and I thank everybody who gave me suggestions on what to see and do. It was every bit as awe-inspiring, beautiful and fun as I imagined it would be!
